Independent Order of Odd Fellows & Rebekahs
May Is Visual Research Month

Seeing Is Believing

Our eyes are our contact with the world. To whatever degree we lose sight, we lose touch with our surroundings and the quality of life is affected.

Blindness is the most feared of all human disabilities. Today, scientists fortified with unprecedented skills, knowledge, and technology are intensifying their research attack against blindness. And there are reasons to believe that preventions, or successful treatment for many diseases of the eye, are achievable goals.

The Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been at the forefront of eye research, teaching and patient care since its founding in 1925. Building upon past achievements and recent advances, The Wilmer stands on the threshold of yet another year of dynamic growth.

In 1956 The Sovereign Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows passed legislation to establish the Odd Fellows World Eye Bank and Visual Research Foundation. A contract was signed in 1961 with the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to establish on Odd Fellow professorship. The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs have been supporting the Odd Fellow Research Chair Endowment at the Wilmer Institute and will continue to do so at least through 2007.

A good way to get information on visual research is to go to the Wilmer Institute website This site contains lots of good information on eye disease, symptoms, treatment and scientific advances. Your contributions help make these advances possible.

Visual Research Foundation
100% Club

Much of the funding for work and programs of the odd Fellows and Rebekahs Visual Research Foundation is made possible by the $1.00 per member campaign among the membership lodges and Units of the Order which donate at least $1.00 per member are recognized with 100% Club Certificates presented at the annual sessions of the Sovereign Grand Lodge and the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies.

Sally Sight

We are also asking lodges to save their change in the Sally Sight Cup during 2003. These very cute Sally Sight materials were mailed to lodges January 2003. Contact Sister Margaret Mortenson Rebekah Assembly Visual Research Chairman for fund raising ideas or information.
